CAPTAIN SUMMONTI – IYM AND TURKEY CADETS

IMG_6671

Every morning, while driving from house to the Istanbul shipyard where my boat is now located, I see thousands of people doing the same as me but, among this “flow” of people there are some young persons that distinguish their self on the multitude populating Istanbul. They all dress the same blue uniform, they all have a concentrated expression and proud eyes… it is visible since far away that those young are maritime students, future sailors. This vision bring me back to my country and to my past when I was dressing a similar uniform with the Navy Cadet Ranks. But this also make me feel proud of what we did until now for young generation as Italianyachtmasters. We did not expect to be so successful on this sector among the various activity we create but, with the help of NAVIGO, it is now a reality that lots of our Captains are officially involved into two big projects approved by the Italian Government School Dept. (Ptp Super Yacht Academy as technical consultant and ISYL Foundation as teachers)… we really went much further ahead since the first stage we did on board of yachts for students in spring 2014 and many international organizations are now interested on those our activities (GEPY, PYA, MYBA, LYBRA and SYBAS for the Superyacht Career project).
I’m in Turkey since almost 2 years and I know how this friendship country is proud of his past and his history. They are right, they have a fantastic historical back ground, on the maritime sector as well… so, I told myself, why do not let Turkey Cadets know something more about yachting ?
Of course it will be difficult replicate in here what Italianyachtmasters did in Italy but at least we can “export” our ideas and our feeling toward young sailors generation.
I found here in Istanbul two fantastic partners for this, URSA Shipyard and C2C agency. When I spoke with them about this they get enthusiastic and did not get surprise that an Italian Capt association was promoting this activity far away from his country and without any other interest beside the wish to work for young generation sailors… this really make me understand that the sailor community is a large and “friendship” community that go across nationality, flag and religions. We worked a little bit on this and at the end we found in “Piri Reis Universitesi” an enthusiastic and lovely partner. Piri Reis Director and his staff showed since the beginning a very deep interest for this.
Piri Reis is a modern and beautiful nautical college based in Tuzla and most of the actual Turkey young sailors complete their academic period in there. This college is a fantastic example of modern and well organized maritime university having the name of one of the most important sailor that the international community had (Admiral Piri Reis that on 1513 create the famous world map now visible at the Topkapi Palace – residence of Sultan Soliman “the Magnificent” ).
On March 15 some students visited my boat and the shipyard. It had been a fantastic day for all persons involved and I hope this will happen again in a near future.
I think I wrote enough and may be you are tired about me, so I’d like to report directly below the student comments about this day.
Only one last thank to the persons that make all this possible .

– Piri Piri Reis Univeritesi (in particular Rector, Prof.Dr. Oral ERDOĞAN)

– Piri Reis Univeritesi (in particular his Director, Capt Nazmi Cesmeci)

– Ursa shipyard Tuzla (in particular one of its manager, Mr Umut Ozdemir)

– C2C International, Istanbul Office (in particular Ms Ebru Kirci… the lady that make all this possible !)
